Separation Anxiety Training for Dogs Everywhere

SEPARATION ANXIETY

Do you have a dog that is miserable when you leave?

Living with a dog who has separation anxiety is exhausting, isolating, and financially draining. To make matters worse, separation anxiety training is a subject of much mythology, with conflicting advice and general nonsensical suggestions from family, friends and the internet.

Let me be your guide through this confusing landscape. Separation anxiety can be resolved in most cases with commitment, patience and consistency. I’ve had two dogs with separation anxiety myself, and it’s been my passion and specialty since 2016.

I’ll provide you with step-by-step coaching and moral support to help you get your dog feeling cool and calm while alone.

When you leave home, does your dog…

  • Bark, whine or howl

  • Pant, pace or drool

  • Have potty accidents

  • Destroy doors, walls or windows trying to escape

  • Injure themselves digging or chewing out of crates

They may be suffering from separation anxiety.

It’s time to contact a professional.

The 411 On Separation Anxiety

Why can’t my dog just relax?

Separation anxiety is a genuine panic disorder or phobia, equivalent to the fear of flying or heights in humans. Like any other type of anxiety, a dog experiencing this phobia doesn’t have any control over it. His destructiveness, self-injury or howling while alone are not symptoms of misdirected anger or stubbornness. He can't be consoled with extra yummy treats and sadly, the escape-proof crates that owners have to resort to often only make things worse.

A Sad Truth

Separation anxiety is the ugly stepchild of behavior problems. Many dog trainers won't treat it, and many rescues won't even try to place dogs who have it. Estimates are that approximately 17% of all dogs suffer from separation anxiety, and it's one of the top causes of early euthanasia for pet dogs and dogs in shelter alike. But like any other fear, effective treatment for separation anxiety is available, based on sound behavioral principles of desensitization and, at times, veterinary support.
